Weeks 2-3
This is part two of my product review of Altra: Lone Peak running shoes. Part one covered my first week in the shoes, and today I’m going over my thoughts on the middle two weeks of my adjustment period.
As I mentioned in my previous review, Altra suggests giving your feet a month to adjust to the new shoes before pulling long mileage or trying anything outside of your ordinary routine. Weeks 2 and 3 have been relatively uneventful for training, and I’m still very pleased with these shoes. Here are a few more thoughts:
The tightness in my calves has gone away with diligent stretching. My theory during week 1 was that I was using muscles I wasn’t used to as a result of the new shoes, and it appears that I was right. As my muscles have gotten used to their new routine, the tightness is at a normal level for my workouts.
My feet still feel great! As I mentioned in the last review, my feet would ache any time I was on them more than usual in my old shoes. Long days at work or long runs would almost certainly having me begging my husband for a foot rub when I got home. I still beg for foot rubs, but it’s not because my feet ache anymore!!
I was reading a couple blogs from other Altra runners, and their reported mileage on their shoes is absolutely astonishing! These runners compete in some serious distance races, and their average mileage on their Altra shoes to date is around 1000 and counting! This is especially surprising for me since most traditional shoes (which cost the same) have to be traded out every 3-6 months (300-600 miles) depending on use. These Altra shoes could end up being a great financial investment as well!
So far, I’m still very very happy with these shoes (I can’t say it enough!). I’ll be giving them a serious test at the end of July; the hubs and I will be competing with our friends in the DC Spartan Sprint. Stay tuned for my post-race final review of Altra: Lone Peak running shoes!
